Deaf Dog Set to Deploy with Michigan National Guard

Axel, a 3-year-old deaf Dogo Argentino, is preparing to deploy with the Michigan National Guard, serving as a ministry dog for the 1st Battalion, 125th Infantry Regiment. Axel knows over 50 commands, many of which are communicated through sign language.

He will accompany soldiers in his own uniform, consisting of a vest and collar specially made for his duties. His handler, Sgt. Mollie Karazim, a religious affairs specialist, adopted Axel as a puppy after he was surrendered to a shelter due to his deafness.

Karazim, who works with chaplains to support soldiers, developed a system of visual cues and hand signals to communicate with Axel. She stated that training a deaf dog requires a different approach, emphasizing the trust built between them since Axel was a puppy.

After years of training, Axel was gradually introduced to unit events to assess his integration. His command team has been supportive of his role, with initial questions focusing on his ability to participate in field operations. Karazim expressed confidence in his capabilities, and Axel has become a valuable member of the unit.

Axel's presence has been noted as beneficial, serving as an icebreaker and helping Karazim connect with soldiers. While Karazim initially aspired to be a canine handler, she found the religious affairs specialist role to be a suitable alternative within the Michigan National Guard. She described the experience of training Axel for deployment as incredibly rewarding, highlighting his positive impact on the ministry and the morale of those around him.
