Deadly TikTok Trend Claimed Another Teen Life in Sydney Fall

A dangerous TikTok trend involving the exploration of abandoned and off-limits buildings has come under scrutiny after a 17-year-old boy died in Sydney. The teenager reportedly fell approximately 30 meters (98 feet) to his death from Hibernian House, a graffiti-covered creative arts hub in Surry Hills, on Tuesday night.

Authorities were called to the five-story building after the incident. CCTV footage showed a group of boys entering the top floor, but only two were seen leaving shortly after. One of the boys was heard making a distressed call to emergency services, stating, "Ambulance! You have to get down here now, I think he died." His two friends were treated for shock, and police are investigating the death as a suspected misadventure.

Just days after the fatal fall, teenage girls were observed entering the same building to take photos, citing inspiration from TikTok videos. A man with an office in Hibernian House noted that it was common to see teenagers exploring the building, particularly during school holidays, despite restricted access. "Somehow they find their way into the building... I know why, it's industrial, it has a lot of character," he told the Daily Mail, adding, "We just tell them to stay off the roof and that it's unsafe."

The building has become a focal point for the social media trend known as 'urban exploring' or 'urbex,' where young people venture into disused or inaccessible locations to film their activities for platforms like TikTok. Reviews and videos online describe Hibernian House as an appealing spot for photoshoots and a place to "chill out."

This incident echoes similar tragedies in the United States. In August, a 17-year-old boy died after falling from an abandoned skyscraper in New Orleans. Weeks later, a 15-year-old boy fell from a disused industrial tower in Illinois, and earlier that month, a 16-year-old girl died after falling through the roof of an abandoned apartment complex in Florida. All these incidents involved teenagers exploring with friends.

Hibernian House, built in the 1920s, has a history that includes serving as the headquarters for the Irish Hibernian Australasian Catholic Benefit Society and hosting various businesses such as brothels, clothing factories, jazz clubs, and, more recently, underground raves. An ominous graffiti tag reading "humans will die" is visible on the building's exterior.
