De Minaur Stuns Zverev, Advances to Vienna Open Final
Alex de Minaur secured a significant victory over world No. 1-elect Alexander Zverev to reach the Vienna Open final and boost his chances of qualifying for the ATP Finals.
Alex de Minaur is celebrating a career-defining win after defeating world No. 1-elect Alexander Zverev in a fearless display at the Vienna Open, advancing to the final.
The Australian secured a 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4) victory in a hard-fought match, setting up a championship clash with Carlos Alcaraz. This win is particularly important as it moves de Minaur back into the top eight of the ATP Race to Turin, with only the Paris Masters remaining as a qualifying event for the end-of-season finals.
This marks one of de Minaur's most significant individual tournament victories, as his previous wins against Zverev were in team events. Zverev is set to become the world No. 1 when the next rankings are released.
"I'm super proud, super stoked of how I handled the moment. I was very calm, even though I threw in a couple of doubles there," de Minaur said. "All in all, I played a very aggressive deciding tiebreak. I played on my terms. I was going to go out swinging and playing the right type of tennis, and that's what made the difference today."
The victory, which saw de Minaur play with intense front-foot aggression, could see him move from 10th to No. 7 in the world rankings if he wins the final. De Minaur's performance included 25 winners, and he managed to regain control in the deciding set after a dip in his serving performance in the second.
Zverev showed visible frustration during the match, including a time violation penalty from umpire Arnaud Gabas for excessive ball bouncing before serving. Despite Zverev's remonstration, which led to the sanction being rescinded, de Minaur maintained his focus, winning the first three points of the tiebreaker with strong shot-making.
De Minaur faces a tough challenge in the final against Alcaraz, who defeated Daniil Medvedev in the other semifinal. De Minaur has a history of losses against Alcaraz, having lost all six previous encounters, including at this year's Australian Open.
"It would be a pretty decent week, I would say," de Minaur commented on the prospect of winning the ATP 500 event. "I'm just happy with the way I'm competing, the way I'm going about my business. Just one foot in front of the other, doing what I can. Ultimately I'm playing some good tennis, looking forward to hopefully finishing strong this season."
