Davis, California, has secured the No. 2 spot on Kayak's list of the nation's most underrated college towns, according to a recent report. The city, home to the University of California, Davis (UC Davis), was recognized for its affordable hotel prices, extensive bike paths, and vibrant farmers markets.
Kayak's findings indicate that travelers increasingly favor lesser-known destinations over major metropolitan areas, with nearly 85% of jet-setters preferring such locales. The trend of "nanocations," or short, spontaneous trips, is also on the rise, with 63% of vacationers embracing quicker getaways that require minimal planning.
Davis boasts an average hotel price of $148 per night, significantly lower than other notable college towns like State College, Pennsylvania, which averages $282 per night. The city's commitment to sustainability is evident in its "sustainability-first" mindset and its renowned farmers markets. Davis is also celebrated for its extensive network of bike paths, with some areas having more bicycles than cars. The city pioneered bike lanes in the U.S., installing the first official ones in 1967.
Clemson, South Carolina, was ranked as the top underrated college town. Eugene, Oregon, also made the list at No. 8. Other college towns mentioned include West Lafayette, Indiana; Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Oxford, Mississippi; Boone, North Carolina; Athens, Georgia; Ann Arbor, Michigan; and State College, Pennsylvania.
The Kayak report, part of its "What the Future Report 2026," compiled data from social media trends and extensive hotel searches conducted between October 1, 2024, and March 13, 2026, for travel within 2026. Average hotel prices are based on one-night stays in a double room.
