David Lammy, a Labour MP and former Deputy Prime Minister, is reportedly planning a bid for the London mayoralty in 2028, contingent on current Mayor Sadiq Khan deciding against seeking a fourth term. Labour sources suggest Lammy believes the party's electoral prospects in London have improved, particularly with the perceived decline of the Green Party's influence under Zack Polanski.

Sir Sadiq Khan, who has served as Mayor of London since May 2016 and secured re-election in 2021 and 2024, indicated on Saturday that he would make a decision about running again in 2028 next year. He stated his "tank is full" and that he remains "fizzing with ideas." Khan has been credited by supporters with taking decisive action on air pollution, implementing social programs such as free school meals, and modernizing London's transit system. However, critics point to challenges in street crime and policing, financial burdens on drivers through vehicle charges, and the management of Transport for London's finances during economic fluctuations.

Lammy, the London-born MP for Tottenham, previously positioned himself as a candidate for London Mayor in 2014, campaigning on issues such as affordable housing linked to average earnings in each borough, and proposing a cap on private-sector rents and higher council tax bands for larger properties. He was criticized by Conservatives during his tenure as Justice Secretary for accidental prisoner releases. A review chaired by Lammy in 2017 highlighted disparities in the justice system, noting that Black individuals constituted a disproportionate percentage of the prison population relative to their share of the overall population.

The political landscape, according to internal Labour assessments, suggests an opening for Lammy's ambition. With Andy Burnham now Prime Minister, Lammy was removed from the Cabinet. His potential candidacy is seen by some within the party as an opportunity, especially if the Green Party's support continues to wane. Lammy's previous mayoral campaign aimed to represent 'all of London,' critiquing both Boris Johnson and Ken Livingstone.
