David Henrie Says 'How I Met Your Mother' Residuals Outpace 'Wizards of Waverly Place'
The actor stated that network television handled residuals significantly better than children's programming.
Actor David Henrie has revealed a stark contrast in residual payments between his roles on the Disney Channel's "Wizards of Waverly Place" and the CBS sitcom "How I Met Your Mother." Henrie, who starred as Justin Russo in "Wizards of Waverly Place" from 2007 to 2012 and reprised the role in the sequel series, stated that he receives minimal residuals from the Disney show. "Disney was very... I think it was after at that time, they hadn’t like combined, so there really wasn’t much residuals," Henrie explained on the "Good Guys" podcast. "Maybe a little bit here and there. But nothing, really."
Conversely, Henrie, who played Luke, the on-screen son of Josh Radnor's character in "How I Met Your Mother" from 2005 to 2014, confirmed that he continues to receive substantial residuals from the popular CBS series. "Network TV took really good care of their people," he commented. "I don’t know what it was about kids’ television."
Henrie recounted an instance where a "How I Met Your Mother" residual check led him to believe there was an error due to its high amount. "I called my business manager and I was like, ‘They made a mistake. There’s no way. They added a zero on accident,'" he shared. "And they’re like, ‘Nope. That’s it.’ I was like, ‘Unbelievable.'" He noted that the comedy series, which concluded over a decade ago, still provides him with significant residual income.
He further elaborated on his involvement in "How I Met Your Mother," explaining that while he filmed 30 episodes, editing choices led to his appearance in nearly 90 episodes. Henrie was 16 when he began his role on the sitcom, which depicted the story of how his character's father met his mother. Though Bob Saget provided the voice for the future Ted Mosby, Henrie stated he never worked directly with the late comedian on set.
