Actor David Harbour recently voiced criticism of capitalism, drawing a parallel between societal values and his former $7 million Brooklyn brownstone, which featured ornate French wallpaper.

Harbour, known for his role as Jim Hopper in Netflix's "Stranger Things," shared his thoughts during an interview with Next Best Picture owner Matt Neglia about his HBO show "DTF St. Louis." The actor, 51, recalled watching the 1997 film "The Ice Storm" as a child, stating that it influenced his perception of a "capitalist mindset" in society.

He described a perceived societal tendency to value an isolated, individualistic ideal of family and homeownership over communal support. "There's a very sort of capitalist, you know, mindset to this ideology, and I think there is something about the communal living in America that we all kind of long for," Harbour explained. He contrasted this with nuclear family structures that he suggested exist independently of broader social connections, advocating instead for the idea of friendship, common ground, and mutual support.

Harbour's comments surfaced years after he and his then-wife, singer Lily Allen, offered a tour of their renovated Brooklyn townhouse to Architectural Digest. The residence, which they sold in May 2026 for $7 million, was noted for its extensive use of high-end wallpaper from the French brand Zuber. The cost for this wallpaper can range from $60,000 to over $100,000, depending on the quantity and customization needed for large rooms.

The four-level home, originally listed at $8 million after Harbour and Allen's separation, contained five bedrooms and four bathrooms. It featured distinctive design elements, including a tiger-print media room and a kitchen inspired by "The Godfather." The couple married in Las Vegas in September 2020 and Harbour became a stepfather to Allen's two daughters.

Reports in February 2025 indicated their marriage was faltering, and the couple subsequently separated. Allen's album released in October 2025 reportedly detailed the breakdown of their relationship. Around the same period, Harbour sold a one-bedroom condo in Nolita, purchased in 2017 for $2 million, for $2.7 million in August 2025.
