David De Gea Questions Premier League Title Count Amid Man City Charges

Former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has weighed in on the ongoing discussion regarding Manchester City's 115 charges by the Premier League. Following a guilty verdict on the majority of these charges, De Gea humorously questioned how his own Premier League title count might be affected.

Manchester City faced accusations of widespread financial rule breaches over a period of sustained success, with an independent panel reaching a conclusion in 2024. The club is expected to appeal the decision, but any potential punishment is now anticipated. Some supporters have called for the club to be stripped of trophies won during the time in question.

The charges initially focused on offenses from the 2009-10 to the 2017-18 seasons, with further charges relating to non-compliance with the investigation between December 2018 and February 2023.

De Gea, who played for Manchester United from 2011 to 2023, winning the league title in the 2012-13 season, posted on X: "So…… Let’s talk. How many Premier League titles have I won then?"

If Manchester City were to hypothetically be stripped of some of their titles, De Gea's own title count could increase. Manchester United finished as runners-up to City in the 2011-12 season, the year De Gea joined. They also finished second in the 2017-18 and 2020-21 seasons.

Rio Ferdinand, another former Manchester United player, also commented on the situation, posting: "Another Premier League medal to be added to the cabinet." Ferdinand's United side finished second to City in the 2011-12 season, a campaign that concluded with Sergio Aguero's last-minute goal securing City's first Premier League title.

Other former United players have also voiced their opinions. Gary Neville has previously described the case as a "disgrace" and a "stain on the game," while Paul Scholes stated that a guilty verdict would be "bad for the integrity of Manchester City."
