David Cameron Celebrates 60th Birthday with Cold Plunge in Cornwall
The former Prime Minister marked his milestone birthday with a weekend of celebrations, including a chilly dip in the sea.
David Cameron welcomed his 60th birthday with a bracing cold plunge into the sea on a Cornish beach. The former Prime Minister joined friends for the early morning swim on Saturday, recovering from a celebratory dinner held the previous night at his £2 million holiday home in Cornwall.
Despite strong winds and a chilly 13C (55F) weather, Cameron, dressed in blue and white striped shorts, ventured into the waves for a few minutes before walking along the shore. He is hosting a three-day celebration for his milestone birthday, a stark contrast to his 50th, which was overshadowed by the Brexit vote.
The festivities include a lavish dinner on Friday night and an even grander affair on Saturday, catered by Michelin-starred chef Paul Ainsworth, taking place in large marquees erected in his garden. Guests expected to attend include Gordon Ramsay, Jeremy Clarkson, and Helena Bonham Carter. A "surf-off" is also planned for Sunday morning.
Preparations for the event saw giant marquees and food trucks arrive at Cameron's property, with white pennants and bunting decorating the structures. On Friday evening, amid a break in heavy rain, Cameron was seen taking a birthday dip with two friends.
Cameron's 50th birthday in 2016 was intended to be a large gathering at Chequers, the prime ministerial country retreat, but his resignation as Prime Minister following the Brexit referendum led to a smaller, private event. For his 60th, however, no expense has been spared at his Cornish holiday home, purchased in 2017 for £2 million. The property has been remodelled with features like a snooker room, a £8,000 hot tub, and a shepherd's hut.
Cameron, who now sits in the House of Lords as Lord Cameron of Chipping Norton, is a strategic adviser to DLA Piper, Scale AI, and Finback Investment Partners. He is married to Samantha, and they have three grown children. A fourth child, Ivan, died in 2009.
Locals have noted that the Camerons often visit the area, with one observing that he "keeps a low profile and tends to blend in." The family's Cornish property has previously been the subject of local reports, including an incident in 2019 where teenage guests of his daughter were reportedly asked to leave after a gathering became unruly.
