David Bailey Embraces Pressure as Jets' Top Draft Pick

David Bailey, the second overall pick in last year's draft, understands the expectations placed upon him as an anchor for the New York Jets' defense. As he prepares for his first regular-season home game against the Green Bay Packers at MetLife Stadium, Bailey is acutely aware of the significance of his position, particularly given the mixed history of players selected so high in the draft.

Unlike previous No. 2 overall picks, such as the Detroit Lions' Aidan Hutchinson who has excelled, the Jets themselves have experienced challenges with high draft selections, notably with quarterback Zach Wilson in 2021. This context underscores the pressure Bailey faces to deliver immediate impact.

Bailey's commitment to his craft has drawn praise from defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. "What he’s doing in between [games], talking about during the week, it’s giving him a good opportunity," Glenn said. "He has everything you want from a young player when it comes to recovery, studying, staying in the weight room [and] nutrition. He’s doing all those things the way you want a young guy to do it — even more, he’s like a vet when it comes to that."

Bailey attributes his rigorous approach to his draft position and the opportunity to play in the NFL. "Being able to be selected where I was and having this opportunity to play in the league and with these guys, I have to take advantage of it," Bailey stated. "That comes with me doing whatever I can to look to older guys and their work ethic and how they approach the game."

In his NFL debut against the Titans, Bailey registered six pressures and a sack. However, he acknowledged the step up in competition. "The level of competition was different. The line guys I was going up against were a lot better than they were [in college]," he said.

Glenn expects continued improvement from Bailey, who will be tasked with helping to contain the Packers' versatile quarterback Jordan Love. The Jets' pass rushers aim to keep Love in the pocket and limit the effectiveness of Green Bay's receiving corps.

With the Packers potentially playing without running back Josh Jacobs, who remains on the Commissioner’s Exempt List, Bailey and the Jets' defensive front may have further opportunities to pressure Love.

Bailey embraces the spotlight and the expectations that come with being a high draft pick. "I appreciate it. You’ve got to take the good with the bad and embrace it," Bailey said. "I’m working with that mentality and still being another ballplayer out there, having fun. I don’t want to think too much about it, but the expectations are going to be in the back of your mind. But there are more important things to worry about, like helping the team win."
