Dave Portnoy Slams Red Sox Owner John Henry After Playoff Exit
The Barstool Sports founder criticized the team's performance and ownership's spending strategy following their sweep by the Yankees.
Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy has voiced strong criticism of Boston Red Sox owner John Henry following the team's elimination from the postseason. The Red Sox were swept by the New York Yankees in a two-game series, a performance Portnoy deemed "humiliating."
In a social media post, Portnoy, who stated he was battling a high fever, expressed his disappointment with the team's showing. "The Red Sox can’t score. Their lineup and they were awful in September, but this is what John Henry wants," Portnoy said. He accused Henry of aiming only to be competitive enough for a playoff appearance rather than contending for a championship.
Portnoy asserted that the team is "built to be a fringe playoff team" that "gets bounced quickly," referencing their early exit from the Wild Card series. He further stated that the Red Sox "could play the Yankees a 100 times and they will lose 100 times."
The Red Sox offense struggled significantly in the series, scoring only two runs against the Yankees' pitching. Game 2 saw Boston fall 9-2 in the Bronx, with their lineup managing only a few hits against Yankees starters Cam Schlittler and Max Fried.
Beyond the immediate performance, Portnoy criticized Henry's perceived reluctance to invest heavily in the team. He suggested that Henry prefers a model that "keeps seats filled" and aims for a "borderline playoff team" that makes a brief postseason appearance. Portnoy also pointed to past team decisions, including trades and free agency departures, as evidence of a flawed strategy under current leadership.
The Red Sox now head into an offseason facing questions about their offensive talent and future player acquisition strategy, particularly given the limited options in the upcoming free agent market. The team's recent trade for catcher Adley Rutschman, who underperformed after arriving in Boston, was also cited as a questionable move.
