Dave Portnoy Defends Robert Kraft's Ban of Macklemore from Gillette Stadium

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy has publicly endorsed New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft’s decision to prohibit rapper Macklemore from performing at Gillette Stadium. This action contributed to Macklemore's removal from Ed Sheeran's U.S. "Loop Tour" after Kraft cited the artist’s past controversies.

Portnoy expressed his full support for Kraft’s stance in a video shared on X, stating, "I back Robert Kraft banning Macklemore from performing at Gillette 1000% and thank him for having a spine when many others in his shoes don't." He added that Macklemore's attempt to turn the concert into a political rally by delivering a "Free Palestine" message was inappropriate for Kraft’s venue.

"This ain't freedom of speech, homie. He owns the stadium! It's his house," Portnoy stated, emphasizing that fans attend concerts to hear music, not political speeches.

Portnoy also highlighted Macklemore's history, particularly an incident in 2014 where the rapper wore attire criticized for invoking antisemitic caricatures. While Macklemore issued an apology for that event, Portnoy suggested Kraft’s decision was informed by this past.

Macklemore's recent performances during Sheeran's shows in New Jersey included anti-Israel chants and imagery, leading to venue cancellations for subsequent tour dates. Several venues reportedly informed the tour promoter they would not host shows if Macklemore remained on the lineup. Kraft's refusal to host him at Gillette Stadium was a significant factor in his ultimate removal from the tour.

Following his removal, Macklemore accused Kraft of orchestrating a stadium boycott and pledged $1 million of his tour earnings to Palestinian aid. In response, Kraft's office stated that Sheeran had privately approached him about supporting a $2 million humanitarian donation, which Kraft agreed to. Kraft also cited Macklemore's past antisemitic associations and his perceived failure to acknowledge the October 7th Hamas attack.

Portnoy criticized musicians, including Finneas, who withdrew from the tour in protest, calling them hypocrites for prioritizing political statements over their commitments. He reiterated his strong backing for Kraft, stating, "I stand with Bob Kraft 110 percent. More Jews have to speak out."
