Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports, has voiced strong criticism of Tom Brady's post-NFL career activities, labeling them as "cringey" and "lame." In a recent "Wake Up Barstool" segment, Portnoy suggested that Brady's actions represent "one of the great downfalls of an icon."
Portnoy specifically pointed to Brady's recent interactions, including a staged feud with WWE wrestler Logan Paul at Michael Rubin's Fanatics Fest in New York City. He also referenced a video from the FIFA World Cup Final 2026, where Brady appeared to give Paul a middle finger. Portnoy described these moments as contributing to a "legacy that is being lame-ified."
During the "Wake Up Barstool" episode, Portnoy compared Brady to Hailey Welch, the "Hawk Tuah" girl who gained viral fame. He echoed sentiments from co-host Brandon Walker, who stated that Brady now appears to be seeking attention rather than naturally maintaining his stature.
Portnoy also directed criticism at Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin, suggesting that Rubin has the ability to diminish the public image of even prominent figures. Portnoy asserted that Brady, who he considers to be on the same "level star" as Michael Jordan, Lionel Messi, Wayne Gretzky, and David Beckham, should remain "above the fray" and not act as Rubin's "puppet."
Portnoy further elaborated on his views via a social media post, urging Brady to distance himself from Rubin to avoid further "lame-ifying" his legacy. He also expressed satisfaction that he did not have to "pretend this isn’t lame," particularly given his strong support for the New England Patriots, Brady's former team.
Brady, who retired from the NFL in 2022 after a 23-season career, posted on Instagram about his appearance at Fanatics Fest. He wrote, "Had to rise from the dead (retirement 😭) for @fanatics games." He also shared a slideshow from the FIFA World Cup 2026, calling it "one of the greatest month long sporting events" and expressing gratitude for the memories made with friends, family, and athletes.
