Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, a self-proclaimed fan of the Indiana Fever, publicly criticized coach Stephanie White's lengthy pregame speech on Tuesday night. White's remarks were delivered in defense of herself, her players, and the WNBA amid ongoing controversies. Portnoy took to social media to voice his disappointment, stating that he felt the speech did not constitute a genuine apology for perceived coaching missteps.
White's address came prior to the Fever's 106-92 victory over the New York Liberty. The speech addressed two main issues that have garnered significant attention: a hard foul by the Chicago Sky's DiJonai Carrington on Fever player Caitlin Clark, and broader discussions about the league's direction, including commentary on trans athletes in the WNBA.
Regarding the foul on Clark, which resulted in a flagrant 2 penalty for Carrington, White stated that she did not believe the play was intentional. This stance drew criticism from figures like Indiana Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith, who suggested White should be removed from her coaching position. Portnoy echoed a sentiment of dissatisfaction, tweeting, "If she just said ‘I f—-d up the other night. I shoulda defended Sophie (MY PLAYER) and not DJ so I get why our fans our pissed at me’ maybe I can accept the apology. But this didnt (sic) really feel like an apology. More her yelling at us for trying to divide the locker room or something."
Portnoy also referenced a tweet by Carrington, which mentioned "white privilege," and suggested that such commentary, rather than fan reactions, was contributing to division within the team and league. He expressed a desire for a coach who fosters a strong "us vs. the world" mentality for the Fever.
White, who is a member of the LGBTQ+ community, also addressed what she characterized as "hate" and "fear-mongering" attempting to "hijack" the WNBA. She specifically referenced commentary from former NBA players Enes Kanter and Royce White, who have declared for the WNBA draft amid discussions about trans athletes. White asserted that "love will win" over divisiveness and affirmed her unwavering support for her players.
Despite the external controversies, the Indiana Fever have achieved a 21-12 record this season, positioning them fourth in the WNBA standings and in contention for higher playoff seeds.
