Dave Challinor has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Henrik Pedersen as manager of Sheffield Wednesday. The former Stockport County boss has been out of work since departing Edgeley Park in June and has a prior working relationship with Sheffield Wednesday sporting director Simon Wilson.

Pedersen was dismissed on Sunday after his team suffered a 2-0 defeat to Doncaster Rovers the previous day. Sheffield Wednesday currently sits ninth in League One, two points adrift of the playoff positions. The club's hierarchy reportedly felt a change was necessary due to a perceived decline in performance.

Another individual reportedly considered for the role is Martin Paterson, manager of Notts County, who defeated Sheffield Wednesday earlier this month. Paterson, 39, guided County to promotion via the play-offs last summer and has since signed a new contract. However, his work and data analysis, even with restricted finances, have attracted attention from other clubs.

Challinor's tenure at Stockport was marked by success, including two league titles. During both of those championship-winning campaigns, the team amassed over 90 points. For the interim period, Pedersen's assistant, Matt Hamshaw, who joined the coaching staff in August, has been placed in caretaker charge.
