Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Davante Adams has prepared for the team's historic season opener against the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne by researching Australia's most dangerous inhabitants. Adams bypassed cultural aspects of the city in favor of studying the country's venomous wildlife and hazardous waters.
"I think probably what’s typical for Americans to know — the spiders and how dangerous the waters are with all of the octopus," Adams said. He noted that the world's most venomous octopus is found in Australia, along with great white sharks and saltwater crocodiles.
Adams specifically mentioned the blue-ringed octopus, whose bite carries tetrodotoxin, a potent neurotoxin with no known antidote. He also cited the presence of koalas further inland, though he suggested they are less dangerous than the marine life.
In contrast, 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa indicated his focus on Australia might include its coffee culture and potentially a nature exhibit. Adams, however, holds the advantage in wildlife trivia, while Bosa is considered the more immediate threat on the football field.
Beyond his research into Australia's fauna, Adams has been focused on his on-field preparations. He highlighted the Rams' receiving corps' improved understanding of routes, blocking, and non-verbal communication after another year together. Adams described the current receiver room as the most cohesive of his career, crediting the team's upgraded secondary for intensifying practice competition.
Coach Sean McVay's strategic use of two- and three-tight-end formations offers the Rams additional flexibility. These heavier personnel packages can reduce snaps for wide receivers, bolster pass protection for quarterback Matthew Stafford, and still create opportunities for deep-threat plays. This versatility will be crucial when facing Bosa, who aims to play in the opener and pressure Stafford.
Adams drew a parallel between the Rams' offensive strategy and his assessment of Stafford, whom he called "a killer." He believes that when Stafford is given adequate time, he can deliver critical plays, with Adams himself acting as the "venom" to seal the outcome, embodying the 'killer' mentality.
