Darnold's Interception in Overtime Lifts Broncos Over Seahawks

Ja’Quan McMillian intercepted a pass in overtime and Wil Lutz kicked a 53-yard field goal, giving the Denver Broncos a 17-14 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night. The win improved the Broncos' record to 4-2 after a challenging six-week season opener, despite numerous injuries and an inconsistent offense. The Seahawks fell to 3-3, matching their loss total from the previous season.

McMillian's interception came on a pass intended for Rashid Shaheed, marking Sam Darnold's second turnover of the game. This turnover set up Lutz's game-winning kick.

Seattle had tied the game at 14-all with a 34-yard field goal by Jason Myers with three seconds left in regulation. The Seahawks had started their game-tying drive at midfield following a 31-yard punt return by Shaheed, which came after the Broncos' offense went three-and-out for the sixth time.

Denver had appeared to be in position to win in regulation when Kris Abrams-Draine intercepted Darnold's pass at the Denver 30 with 1:25 remaining. However, the Broncos managed to run only 15 seconds off the clock before punting.

Despite scoring only three points in their first eight drives, the Seahawks mounted an 11-play, 67-yard drive that culminated in a one-yard touchdown run by George Holani. Darnold's subsequent two-point pass to Shaheed narrowed the deficit to 14-11 with 5:41 left in the fourth quarter.

Bo Nix led the Broncos on two significant scoring drives in the first half. Defensively, the Broncos, hampered by injuries, sacked Darnold five times and recorded 17 quarterback hits.

Injuries

Seahawks tight end Elijah Arroyo left the game late in the first half with a suspected right shoulder injury. The Broncos were without cornerback Patrick Surtain II and safety Talanoa Hufanga, both sidelined by ankle injuries. Running back Tyler Badie sustained a thumb injury in the second quarter. Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle was evaluated for a shoulder injury in the third quarter but returned to the game.

Next Games

The Seahawks are scheduled to host the Kansas City Chiefs on October 25. The Broncos will host the Arizona Cardinals on the same date.
