Two individuals, dressed in dark clothing and one wearing a cat mask, ascended the Empire State Building's antenna on July 1, 2026, unfurling a banner approximately 1,454 feet above New York City. The banner displayed the message, "when the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace."
This message is a variation of a quote often attributed to Jimi Hendrix, but which was actually spoken by 19th-century British politician William Gladstone. The individuals, who appeared to be a man and a woman, were observed dangling from the antenna, at times holding on with only one hand. The method by which they gained access to the structure and unfurled the banner was not immediately clear.
