Daphne, a seven-year-old Corgi, has become an unlikely star as Britain's most unconventional sheepdog. Standing at just 25 centimeters (approximately 10 inches) tall, she has been assisting with the management of a flock of 1,200 sheep on a farm in South Lakes, Cumbria, for the past five years. Her unique skills have earned her international recognition on social media.
Daphne's primary role involves staying behind the flock, barking on command to guide the sheep in the desired direction. This task is particularly crucial during the busy lambing season in spring, when large numbers of ewes and their lambs need to be moved. Her owner, Heather Hodgson, emphasizes that Daphne's small stature does not hinder her effectiveness.
"She is really good at that time of year when the ewes have their lambs," Ms. Hodgson stated. "They can often be really anxious, constantly looking around for where their offspring might be. Daphne stays behind them, barking on command and keeping them moving."
Ms. Hodgson noted that while farm environments can be noisy with quad bikes, whistles, and human commands, Daphne's consistent barking helps to direct the sheep effectively. In the summer months, Daphne assists in moving flocks between pastures and aiding in the annual shearing process.
Contrary to the common stereotype of Corgis being pampered pets, Ms. Hodgson highlighted their high energy levels, intelligence, and character. Daphne was gifted to her by her husband, Bertie, in 2018, after Ms. Hodgson developed a strong interest in the breed. Daphne quickly integrated into the farm team, working alongside Mr. Hodgson and his Border Collies.
According to the Welsh Corgi League, Corgis were originally bred for herding cattle. Daphne's unique role has captured attention online, with thousands of viewers from countries including the United States, Norway, and China following her activities. Ms. Hodgson created a social media page for Daphne, which has amassed a loyal international following.
While Daphne demonstrates exceptional focus when herding sheep, Ms. Hodgson describes her as calm about 90% of the time. Her work as a sheepdog makes her an unusual but valuable member of the farm. Outside of her duties, Daphne enjoys riding on the quad bike, racing other farm dogs, and relaxing indoors.
Winter presents Daphne's least glamorous season, as her short legs often become covered in mud. Her favorite treats include cheddar cheese and steak fat. When not tending to the flock, her pastimes include participating in farm activities and enjoying quiet time.
