The San Francisco 49ers have signed wide receiver Dante Pettis, bringing the former second-round draft pick back to the team where his NFL career began. The move addresses depth concerns in the 49ers' wide receiver unit, which has been impacted by injuries.
Pettis, 30, was selected by the 49ers in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He spent his first two seasons with the team before being waived in 2020 and subsequently joining the New York Giants. His NFL journey has also included stints with the Chicago Bears and the New Orleans Saints. In New Orleans, Pettis played 16 games over two seasons, recording 227 receiving yards and one touchdown.
The receiver participated in a workout with the 49ers on Tuesday, along with eight other players. His performance during the tryout appears to have led to the contract agreement. Pettis is expected to fill a spot on the team's practice squad once the signing is officially finalized.
Pettis's familiarity with head coach Kyle Shanahan's offensive system is seen as a valuable asset. The team has faced persistent injury issues at the wide receiver position throughout the current season, making additions like Pettis a strategic move for depth.
