Chelsea has confirmed the signing of Brighton striker Danny Welbeck on a two-year contract. The 35-year-old forward brings a wealth of experience to the London club, having spent six seasons with Brighton, where he scored 51 goals.

Welbeck expressed his honor at joining a club of Chelsea's stature during what he described as an exciting period. He cited positive conversations with the manager as a key factor in his decision. The striker is expected to join his new teammates on their pre-season tour, which includes stops in Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Welbeck had 12 months remaining on his previous contract with Brighton.

Welbeck's career includes a formative period in Manchester United's youth system, where he scored 29 first-team goals in 142 appearances. He later played for Arsenal for five years, netting 32 goals. Prior to his time at Brighton, he also had a spell at Watford during the 2019-20 season.

Last season, Welbeck achieved a career-high of 13 Premier League goals. His arrival at Chelsea is anticipated to coincide with other movements within the team's forward line. The club currently lists Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Nicolas Jackson, Marc Guiu, and Joao Pedro as strikers, and it is expected that at least two, possibly three, of these players will be moved on through sales or loans.

Joao Pedro is reportedly considered indispensable and is nearing a new long-term contract. He recently scored a hat-trick in nine minutes during a 6-4 friendly victory against the Western Sydney Wanderers. Delap's performance in the same match was noted as struggling, particularly when surrounded by academy players, in contrast to Joao Pedro's impact after being substituted in with the main squad.

Chelsea's manager, Xabi Alonso, had reportedly also considered other transfer targets, including Granit Xhaka and John Stones. The club has recently secured the signings of Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace for £52 million and Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117 million.
