Actor Danny Glover revealed on Wednesday that he has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2023. His daughter, Mandisa, shared that she noticed the first signs of his condition in 2022, when she observed inconsistencies in his typically sharp memory.
"The history of my dad is that he remembers every single thing back to 1970, what corner he was standing on, who he spoke to, what they spoke about, what color they were wearing, everything," Mandisa told People in an interview published the same day as Glover's public announcement. She explained that she began to notice "pieces of the story [were] missing" when her father recounted narratives about his parents, stories she had heard numerous times before.
This observation prompted Mandisa to wonder, "I said, ‘I wonder what’s going on.'" She described her father's current state as being "aware sometimes and then sometimes not." She also characterized his battle with dementia as "depressing" and a significant change to one's sense of self.
Glover himself shared his ongoing struggle to reconcile with his health, stating, "I’m still not accepting in my mind all parts of it." He acknowledged the reality of his diagnosis while also recognizing that millions of others are affected by the disease. Despite the challenges, Glover expressed a determination to continue living, saying, "I don’t feel like it’s the end of my life. I have work to do."
He announced his diagnosis during a segment on the "Today" show with Lester Holt. Glover, who received the diagnosis in 2023, noted that while he can "live with it in a sense," he anticipates changes as the disease progresses. He expressed gratitude for his family's support, stating that they "absolutely … got [his] back."
Mandisa emphasized the importance of her father sharing his story directly. "That’s really important. And the time is now. What better time but now for him to speak for himself?" she said, explaining her desire for him to control his own narrative. She added, "It’s important because people ask questions sometimes, and I don’t want to be a dishonest person and say, ‘Oh, yeah, everything is all right. It’s all great.'"
Glover, known for his roles in films like "Lethal Weapon," shared a message of hope, stating, "I still have my daughter, I have friends. I want to just say, your life continues."
