Danny Dyer's SNL UK Debut Marked by Royal Revelations and a Cryptic Aversion to a Single Swear Word

Danny Dyer kicked off his hosting gig on Saturday Night Live UK with a self-deprecating monologue that delved into his surprising royal connections and alluded to a previous televised outburst against former Prime Minister David Cameron. The 49-year-old actor acknowledged the potential for live television mishaps, stating, "people don't usually trust me on live TV." He attributed this hesitation partly to "classism" and specifically recalled a 2018 incident where he called Cameron a "tw**" twice during a discussion about the EU referendum on Good Morning Britain.

Dyer revealed that the SNL UK producers had set clear rules for his appearance, warning him against using a "certain swear word" – which he described as "the best one." He expressed confidence in his ability to refrain, joking, "I can go 75 minutes cold turkey." However, his resolve was playfully challenged by his Rivals co-star Lisa McGrillis, who interjected from the audience, predicting he would not be able to complete the show without uttering the forbidden word. Dyer's assertion that he could manage without swearing was met with a humorous anecdote from McGrillis about his previous linguistic habits.

Despite the imposed restriction, Dyer showcased his versatility by attempting accents from different parts of the UK, though he demurred when it came to a Welsh accent. He then pivoted to discussing his discovered royal lineage, a revelation from the show "Who Do You Think You Are?". Dyer expressed a somewhat jaded view of his aristocratic ties, quipping, "Who wants to be related to that little mob?" He did, however, acknowledge a more distant ancestor, Thomas Cromwell, referencing the historical figure from "Wolf Hall," and humorously wishing him a posthumous good time.

Toward the end of his monologue, Dyer offered a more reflective message to the audience, urging them to "curb your ego, nourish your souls." He concluded this thought by stopping just short of uttering the forbidden word, leaving the audience to fill in the blank. Following his hosting performance, viewers took to social media platform X, with many requesting Dyer become a permanent cast member, praising his comedic timing and seamless integration into the show's format. Comments included sentiments like "Petition for Danny Dyer to join the main cast. Absolutely sublime!" and "Danny Dyer is easily the best host #SNLUK has had so far."

The incident recalling his past critique of David Cameron harks back to a viral moment from 2018. During a live television appearance, Dyer questioned why Cameron, who he referred to as a "t***," had not been held accountable for the Brexit outcome and was instead enjoying himself in France. He criticized the lack of clarity surrounding Brexit, calling it a "mad riddle that no one knows what it is," and suggested that politicians, including Cameron, should face consequences for initiating the process. Piers Morgan, also present during that segment, attempted to elicit a response from Jeremy Corbyn, but Dyer interjected again with another expletive directed at the former Prime Minister.
