Danny Dyer Joins Thames 'Poo Water' Protest, Calls for Water Company Nationalization
Actor Danny Dyer participated in a protest on the River Thames, using a sculpture to highlight concerns over sewage discharges into waterways and advocating for the nationalization of water companies.

Actor Danny Dyer has joined a protest on the River Thames, drawing attention to the issue of sewage discharges into UK waterways. Dyer, accompanied by campaigners, sailed on a boat adorned with a large brown sculpture, symbolizing pollution.
Kevin McKenna, a spokesperson, stated that Dyer is a "man of passion" and is determined to address the problem. He highlighted that many local residents are "sick of it [sewage discharges]" and desire an end to the practice. Dyer, along with the Sittingbourne and Sheppey MP, is also calling for the nationalization of water companies.
Southern Water, a supplier in the region, reported a nearly one-third reduction in pollution incidents between 2023 and 2025. The company attributes this improvement to a significant investment program totaling £8.9 billion, aimed at addressing the root causes of pollution. A spokesperson for Southern Water emphasized that "no pollution is acceptable" and that the company is working to implement improvements for its customers.
A representative for Water UK, a trade body, confirmed that efforts are underway to cease sewage discharges "as fast as we possibly can."
Recent classifications from Defra's Bathing Water Quality site indicate that Leysdown, an area with samples taken between 2022 and 2025, is rated as having good water quality. The website also states that no pollution incidents have been reported for Leysdown during that period.
