Danny Danon: Terrorist Attempts Failed to Break Israel's Spirit
Former UN Ambassador highlights resilience in the face of attacks, emphasizing Israel's enduring strength and diplomatic progress.
The spirit of Israel remains unbroken despite repeated attempts by terrorists to destabilize the nation and derail its progress, according to Danny Danon, Israel’s former Permanent Representative to the United Nations. Danon points to the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack and a recent mid-air incident on Flydubai Flight 1073 as examples of efforts to undermine Israel, arguing that each time, the nation's resilience and determination have prevailed.
The October 7th Attacks and Their Aftermath
Danon recounts the brutality of the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attacks, describing it as the deadliest assault on Jewish people since the Holocaust. He notes that Hamas terrorists not only killed approximately 1,200 people, murdered families, and attacked a music festival, but also took 251 hostages into Gaza. According to Danon, these actions were intended to shatter Israel's sense of security, terrorize Jews globally, and prevent peace and normalization between Israel and its Arab neighbors, citing captured IDF documents that show Hamas monitored efforts to advance relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia.
Despite the devastating impact of Oct. 7, Danon asserts that the attack did not destroy the broader framework of peace and cooperation Israel had been building. He draws a parallel to the resilience shown by Israeli civilians who fought back against terrorists with their bare hands on that day.
The Flydubai Flight 1073 Incident
Danon details the events of Flydubai Flight 1073 on Sept. 30, where Israeli passengers were returning to Israel for the third anniversary of Oct. 7. He describes an alleged stabbing attempt by the co-pilot on the captain, leading to the co-pilot attempting to crash the aircraft with its 174 passengers. Heroic passengers intervened, rushing the cockpit to stop the co-pilot and save the flight. This incident, Danon argues, was another attempt to destroy the reality of Israelis traveling and building relationships across borders in a new Middle East. The safe landing and the welcome survivors received at Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv are presented as evidence of this ongoing resilience.
Hostage Negotiations and Diplomatic Resilience
Danon highlights Israel's commitment to its citizens, stating that the nation never stopped fighting for its hostages. He announced that the final hostage, Master Sgt. Ran Gvili, was identified and returned for burial, thanking the Trump administration for its role in securing their release. Danon also points to Israel's diplomatic resilience, referencing the six-year anniversary of the Abraham Accords and celebrations attended by officials from the United States, the UAE, Bahrain, Morocco, and Kazakhstan. He notes that despite criticism over the war in Gaza, Israel continues to build new partnerships globally.
Enduring Resilience
Danon concludes that resilience is an intrinsic part of Israel's national identity. He asserts that while Oct. 7 left deep scars, it did not break the nation. The strength to rise from tragedy, rebuild, and choose life, he writes, is what defines Israel's enduring spirit, evident in the aftermath of the Holocaust and in the current generation's response to recent attacks. The narrative concludes with a strong affirmation that terror will not succeed in breaking Israel, not on Oct. 7, not in the skies, and not ever.
