Cipriani, a former England rugby star, and actress McCord, who tied the knot in August, attracted criticism for their wedding registry, which asked friends and family to contribute financially to their ceremony. The couple had requested contributions ranging from $100 to $600 towards wedding costs on a platform like Honeyfund. Specific requests included $125 for music, $100 for the wedding certificate, $600 for floristry, and a $600 cake. The total amount sought was approximately £10,660, not including separate cash donations.
The wedding itself was described as a low-key affair with some empty seats. McCord later explained that she believed she had made the wedding wishlist private and was unaware it had been made public. She told The Sun that the crowdfunding resulted in negative comments, including people donating small amounts to write critical messages, and even death threats.
Insiders called the move "tacky and distasteful" given the couple's perceived lavish lifestyles. Cipriani is estimated to have earned around £4 million during his rugby career, while McCord is believed to have amassed a similar fortune through her acting roles.
McCord stated that she created the registry after guests repeatedly asked about gifts, and she felt she already owned most household items. She mentioned that the wedding invitation included a note suggesting contributions towards flowers and music on their big day in lieu of gifts.
The couple, who first met on the dating app Raya about a decade ago, have a history of dating on and off. They reconnected in 2024 after a previous split and publicly confirmed their relationship in the summer of 2024.
McCord's engagement ring is reportedly a 15-carat, emerald-cut diamond set in yellow gold. Cipriani was previously married to Victoria Rose, with whom he finalized their divorce in August 2024.
