Dangerous Military Device Washes Ashore, Beachgoer Takes it Home

A potentially hazardous military device, a Navy MK25 phosphorus marine marker, washed ashore on a California beach and was subsequently taken to a nearby residence, prompting a response from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad and Navy explosive experts. The beachgoer who found the device in Ojai had apparently intended to remove it from public access, fearing it could be dangerous.
Officials from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad issued a warning about the device, emphasizing that marine markers, even if wet or appearing expended, are extremely dangerous. The markers contain phosphorus, which can remain hazardous and spontaneously reignite or explode when dry and moved. They can reach temperatures up to 3,000 degrees and contain toxic material.
The MK25 is designed to create a visible smoke and flame signal on the ocean's surface for aircraft or vessels. It can be deployed from the air or manually.
Authorities did not specify the exact beach where the marker was found or how long it had been in the water. However, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad reported encountering similar devices washing ashore in recent weeks. Officials suggest that recent powerful storms and rough ocean conditions, including swells from Hurricane Marie and Hurricane Polo, may be responsible for bringing these items to the coast.
California has been experiencing high surf and dangerous ocean conditions, partly due to El Niño. Governor Gavin Newsom declared a precautionary state of emergency, with several coastal communities also issuing local declarations due to existing damage and potential threats.
In response to these discoveries, authorities are urging the public to exercise caution. They advise anyone who finds a suspicious item resembling military equipment to leave it in place, evacuate the area, and call 911 immediately.
