Dana Perino Recounts Serendipitous Love Story and Career Path
The Fox News anchor and former White House press secretary shared details of her unexpected romance and journey into public service.
Fox News anchor Dana Perino described her enduring marriage to Peter McMahon as a tale of "plane luck," stemming from a chance encounter as the last passengers boarding a flight. The couple, married for 28 years, met while discussing history and Perino's initial apprehensions about the Washington D.C. dating scene.
Perino, who grew up in Wyoming and attended the University of Southern Colorado, worked as a waitress and hosted a campus TV show. Her childhood included reading local newspapers and aspiring to a career in news, a path influenced by her sister's encouragement. A pivotal moment occurred when she met Karl Rove, which eventually led to a helicopter ride on Marine One and an encounter with then-President George W. Bush. Perino recalled her nervousness about moving to Washington, fearing it would preclude a future in television.
In an interview during a break from her co-hosting duties on "The Five," Perino recounted living in Great Britain for a year with McMahon, who was from the U.K. She found the experience isolating and suggested they move back. The couple was living in San Diego in 2001 when Perino, feeling stagnant in a public relations role, was invited to return to Washington to work for the Bush administration's Justice Department. Her husband relocated cross-country with their dog to support her career move.
Perino reflected on her background, noting her upbringing in a small, Lutheran town and her initial concerns about oppressive government. She also shared an experience from her time as White House press secretary, recalling a challenging period dealing with a negative story about the president. She described a learning process in communication and her desire to be both "elegant" and an "optimist," while acknowledging her pragmatic nature.
