Dan Wilson Announces His Own Firing as Seattle Mariners Manager

Seattle Mariners manager Dan Wilson personally announced his dismissal from the team Sunday, a highly unusual move that broke with standard Major League Baseball protocol.

Before the Mariners' final game of the season against the Los Angeles Angels, Wilson held a closed-door meeting to inform players and staff. Following the game, he addressed the media, confirming his departure and taking questions before front-office executives spoke to reporters.

"This season has been very difficult, and of course, the results have not been what any of us have expected," Wilson said during his press conference. "As a result, it's concluded that today is my last day as manager of the Seattle Mariners."

Wilson, who had been with the Mariners organization since his playing days began in 1994 and took over as manager in August 2024, expressed his deep connection to the city and the team. "I'm still processing this with my family, and it's a very difficult day," he stated. "We love this city. We love this community and we appreciate the organization for what it has meant to the family since coming here as a player in '94. We feel extremely blessed by all the opportunities we've been afforded."

Expectations for the Mariners were high entering the 2026 season. The team had reached Game 7 of the ALCS in the previous year, falling just short of the World Series. However, the 2026 campaign saw a significant decline, with the club finishing third in the AL West with a 76-86 record. Factors contributing to the downturn included offensive regression from key players, inconsistent starting pitching, a late-season bullpen collapse, and poor defensive metrics.

Players' late-season comments had pointed to a lack of clubhouse accountability as a major issue. When pressed on whether leadership had failed to enforce standards, Wilson acknowledged the possibility. "That's always a necessary component, and I think accountability comes in a lot of different ways," Wilson said. "Obviously, I think you look back, and there's a lot of things that you can point to, and perhaps that's one of them."

Regarding the decision-making process, Wilson accepted the typical role of a manager in such situations. "I've been in baseball a while, and this is what happens," Wilson said. "Managers shoulder the blame and shoulder the responsibility. And this is obviously difficult."

Seattle Mariners President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto and General Manager Justin Hollander will remain in their positions for the 2027 season. Dipoto acknowledged that the team "collectively failed to meet our own expectations" and agreed that a change in management was necessary.
