Dan Quinn Becomes Betting Favorite for Next NFL Coach Fired After Commanders' Tie
Washington's head coach faces increased scrutiny following a critical clock management blunder and a dismal season record.
Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn has emerged as the betting favorite to be the next NFL coach fired, with 47 percent of the market share on Kalshi as of Tuesday afternoon. This surge in odds follows a significant clock management error during the team's 27-27 tie against the New York Giants on Sunday.
In the closing moments of overtime, with Washington possessing the ball at the Giants' 24-yard line and 12 seconds remaining, quarterback Jayden Daniels took a sack rather than attempting to spike the ball or send out the field goal unit. The sack allowed the clock to expire, ending the game in a tie and squandering a potential game-winning opportunity.
Quinn acknowledged his responsibility for the situation, stating, "It starts with me first off, no doubt about it." The Commanders' tie moves their record to 1-3-1, placing them last in the NFC East. This season has seen the team win only three of its last 17 games.
Quinn's tenure has been marked by questionable time management. He has utilized at least one timeout before the final five minutes of a half in 28 of his 42 games coaching Washington, burning a total of 48 such timeouts. Discipline has also been a concern, with the team committing 21 pre-snap penalties against the Giants, despite Quinn's efforts to address the issue by bringing officials into practice.
This marks a significant shift from Quinn's debut season in 2024, when he led Washington to a 12-5 record, an appearance in the NFC Championship game, and earned a fourth-place finish in NFL Coach of the Year voting.
Quinn is now projected to be fired ahead of Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni, who has a 17 percent chance following the Eagles' third consecutive second-half collapse. Other coaches in the betting market include Todd Bowles (16 percent), Robert Saleh (11 percent), and Jim Harbaugh (11 percent).
Quinn stated that he has candid conversations with principal owner Josh Harris regarding his job security, calling it a "normal process." He added, "no one is pleased with this outcome and where we’re at."
The Commanders are scheduled to face the undefeated San Francisco 49ers on Monday night before entering their bye week.
