Dan Levy Criticizes Shane Gillis' SNL Monologue as 'Misogynistic'
The actor called out the comedian's remarks about women's gym attire, stating 'more men need to be standing up in opposition.'
Actor Dan Levy expressed strong disapproval of a "Saturday Night Live" monologue delivered by host Shane Gillis, characterizing the comedian's remarks about women's gym attire as "misogynistic" and leaving him "speechless." Levy shared his reaction in an Instagram Reel posted on Sunday.
"Women wearing short shorts to the gym does not make them whores. It makes the men calling them whores misogynists. There’s a difference there," Levy stated, directly addressing Gillis's comments. "I’m speechless that something like that can exist on live national television."
Levy, known for his role in "Schitt's Creek," emphasized the need for men to actively challenge such sentiments. "More men need to be standing up in opposition," he urged. "It’s complacency that has created the environment with which women are sexually assaulted and it’s a conversation opposed to a crime. Men need to be defending women more."
He further argued that the issue extends beyond women, calling it an "everybody issue." Levy elaborated, "Because the more that men objectify women in the media, the more that other men see them as objects and treat them as objects. They are not objects. They are superior human beings to men."
During his "SNL" hosting gig on Saturday, Gillis, 38, made comments about women's gym clothing, which drew criticism. "I haven’t been to the gym in so long, I didn’t realize women just dressed like whores now," Gillis remarked, with his observations including descriptions of workout shorts. He also noted, "The shorts, have you seen the shorts? Those neon, they’re like artificial bait color. The wrinkles go around the cheeks and all combine at the butthole."
Gillis did offer an apology at the end of the show, but it was for an unrelated incident where he inadvertently used an expletive during a sketch. "And, uhh, sorry about earlier. Thank you guys very much. Have a good night," he said while acknowledging the cast and musical guest Rosalía.
Several celebrities, including Hannah Einbinder and Elizabeth Banks, voiced their agreement with Levy's stance in the comments section of his Instagram post. Elaine Hendrix also shared her support, writing, "THIS Thank you!" while Flavor Flav commented with a "💯."
