The brother of Damilola Taylor, who was killed in a stabbing attack in 2000, has emphasized the urgent need for action on knife crime.

Speaking in a new BBC documentary, Tunde Taylor stated that it is “very important” to retell his brother's story, over 25 years after the tragedy. He noted that a new generation has grown up without fully understanding Damilola's life and the circumstances of his death.

"There's a whole generation of young people who were not around at the time and they get the chance to see him as a person, a young boy, his ambitions and how the tragedy cut that," Taylor said. He expressed hope that by reflecting on Damilola's story, young people might reconsider their choices.

Actor John Boyega, a friend of Damilola's, also shared his reflections in the documentary. He explained that Damilola's killing had a profound impact on him, motivating him to pursue his dreams and achieve his ambition of becoming an actor.

Boyega recalled a poem Damilola used to recite, which spoke of traveling far and wide, choosing destiny, and remolding the world. "From that poem [you can tell] he had plans and he didn't care about the environment he was in, he was more fixated on where he was going. So what's my excuse?" Boyega stated.

Damilola Taylor, aged 10, was fatally stabbed on November 27, 2000, in South London. His death brought national attention to the issue of youth violence and knife crime in the UK. The documentary aims to revisit the incident and its impact, with Tunde Taylor stressing that the need for prevention is greater than ever.
