Dame Esther Rantzen, Esteemed Broadcaster and Campaigner, Dies at 86

Broadcaster and campaigner Dame Esther Rantzen has died at the age of 86. Her family announced her passing on Wednesday, following a battle with lung cancer, which was first revealed in January 2023.

Dame Esther had previously shared in December 2023 that she had joined Dignitas and was considering ending her life there. However, earlier this month, she stated that it was too late for her to travel to the Swiss clinic, expressing anguish over her loved ones witnessing her suffering.

Following the news, tributes emerged on social media from various public figures. Davina McCall expressed her gratitude to Dame Esther for "making a difference to so many people's lives," calling her an "inspiration" and a "real icon and a national treasure."

Anton Du Beke shared his sadness, recalling his partnership with Dame Esther on "Strictly Come Dancing" in 2004 and their subsequent friendship. He also noted her wisdom and mentorship as he began his television career, describing her as a "forerunner for women on television" and an "ultimate breaker of the glass ceiling."

Lizzie Cundy lauded Dame Esther as an inspiration who "helped so many," and Anthea Turner remembered her as a "guiding light" who offered valuable advice.

Lorraine Kelly tearfully described Dame Esther as a "pioneer and a force of nature" who was "funny, forthright and fabulous."

Before her death, Dame Esther had criticized the laws in England and Wales that would criminalize loved ones attempting to assist in ending a life. She stated that while she had made plans to travel to Switzerland, she was too physically fragile to make the journey.

Her death came weeks after the Assisted Dying Bill, which she strongly supported, was narrowly defeated in the House of Commons. Dame Esther had expressed her sadness at the bill's rejection, calling it a "tragic day."

Her children, Miriam, Rebecca, and Joshua Wilcox, released a statement announcing her death. They shared that her "legacy of compassion and understanding will live on in her charities Childline and the Silverline." They expressed their gratitude for her life and stated they would miss her immeasurably, noting her "endless capacity for joy" and "beautiful way with words."

Dame Esther's final public appearance was in June, celebrating her 85th birthday with loved ones. Her family shared that she had penned a poignant message before her death, expressing gratitude for the friendships and support she received throughout her long and happy life. She suggested donations to Dignitas, Oakhaven Hospice, and Cats Protection in her name.

Her family asked for privacy and time to grieve, emphasizing that her work with charities for children, older people, and the terminally ill meant the world to her.
