Dalton Rushing Faces Uphill Battle for Dodgers Playoff Roster Spot

Dalton Rushing is set to rejoin the Los Angeles Dodgers and make his case for a playoff roster spot, though manager Dave Roberts acknowledged the opportunity will be brief. Rushing is expected to get only a few at-bats in the final weekend of the regular season, facing an uphill battle to secure a place on the postseason roster.

"It is going to be a small sample," Roberts said. "Just conduct at-bats and see what you got."

Rushing's path to the playoffs has been hindered by a late-season elbow injury that sidelined him and allowed other players to gain ground. Initially considered a strong candidate for the backup catcher role, his season was disrupted by the injury that occurred shortly before the trade deadline.

During the period Will Smith was sidelined with a neck injury, Rushing stepped in as the primary catcher for June and July. He showed progress, batting .249 with 12 home runs and 36 RBIs in 78 games. However, his injury setback has led to him being leapfrogged on the depth chart.

Recent call-up Josue De Paula has emerged as a potential option for the playoff bench, particularly as a left-handed hitting alternative. De Paula's speed on the bases and ability to play the outfield, albeit with defensive limitations, present a different skillset.

"There’s some nuanced conversation that needs to happen," Roberts stated, referring to the roster decisions. "[about] what fits best for a potential first-round matchup."

Despite Rushing's return to the active roster on Friday, he appears to have run out of time to displace De Paula or other players in the Dodgers' immediate postseason plans. De Paula was optioned to the minor leagues earlier this week to make room for Rushing's activation, signaling a brief opportunity for Rushing to audition in the final series against the San Francisco Giants.
