Daisy May Cooper Discusses Trolling Over Weight Loss, Health Concerns
The comedian revealed she faced backlash and fears of reduced acting roles following her 10-stone transformation.
Daisy May Cooper, known for her role in "This Country," has spoken out about the negative online commentary and trolling she experienced after shedding 10 stone. The 40-year-old comedian appeared on The One Show to promote her new book, showcasing her significant weight loss, which saw her go from a size 24 to a size 10.
Cooper attributes her transformation to the ultra low-carb Keto diet. However, she revealed that the change in her appearance led to a barrage of criticism and fears that it would negatively impact her acting career. She stated that the comments often claimed she was no longer funny due to her weight loss, a sentiment she finds infuriating.
"What the fk? Why do women have to be fking fat to be funny?" Cooper questioned in a BBC podcast, expressing anger at the notion. She elaborated that while she champions body positivity, she was personally unhappy and unhealthy at her heaviest, experiencing chest pains and breathlessness from simple activities like climbing stairs.
Cooper has taken steps to distance herself from the negativity, stating she no longer owns a phone and relies on her personal assistant to manage her Instagram account. She described the online comments as "horrible and mean."
Her dramatic weight loss and subsequent cosmetic procedures, including lip fillers, also presented continuity challenges for the filming of season two of her show "Am I Being Unreasonable?" Cooper recounted to The Jonathan Ross Show that the 30-second gap between season one and season two of the show saw her lose considerable weight and undergo cosmetic enhancements, prompting concerns about how the visual changes would be addressed.
Cooper has also spoken about the physical toll of the Keto diet, which she followed initially. She mentioned developing kidney stones due to her restrictive diet of meat and cheese, and has since advised against it. She characterized the pressure on women to lose weight as "insane."
