Dad of Two Killed by Cyclist in Central Park

A 41-year-old man was killed after being struck by a cyclist in Central Park on September 23, according to police and his family.

Richie O’Brien was walking through the park on his way to his job as a steamfitter around 6:35 a.m. when a cyclist traveling north on the West Drive near West 84th Street collided with him. O’Brien sustained severe head trauma and was transported to Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he died on Sunday, his family reported.

O'Brien's family established a GoFundMe page, stating that he was a "proud Local 638 Steamfitter" who worked to provide for his wife, Ronni, and their two daughters, Kylie and Mia. The family also noted that O'Brien was an organ donor, giving "the gift of life to others through organ donation" in his final moments.

The cyclist, 32, was also thrown from his bike after the impact and received medical attention at the scene for his injuries. The New York Police Department's Collision Investigation Squad is continuing to investigate the incident.
