D. Smith, ‘Love & Hip Hop Atlanta’ Star, Announces Detransition
The reality television personality and musician shared on Instagram that he is now living as a man and using he/him pronouns after 12 years identifying as a transgender woman.
D. Smith, known for their role on “Love & Hip Hop Atlanta,” announced on Instagram that they are detransitioning after living as a woman for 12 years. Smith, 51, stated that this decision marks the beginning of a new chapter where they will be living and presenting as a man, using he/him pronouns.
“Over the last twelve years, I lived my life publicly as a transgender woman,” Smith wrote in the post. “Those years weren’t a mistake. They were real. They introduced me to extraordinary people, profound experiences, and lessons that I will always carry with me forever.”
Smith emphasized that the detransition is not an attempt to erase their past, explaining, “Living my life as a woman for 12 years showed me the man that I wanted to become.” They added that their respect and love for the transgender community remain unchanged, and they continue to believe in the right of every person to live with dignity, safety, and compassion.
The musician, who has worked with artists such as Lil Wayne and Katy Perry, was the first transgender person to appear on “Love & Hip Hop Atlanta” in 2016. At the time, Smith expressed the importance of visibility for the transgender community on the show.
Smith concluded the announcement by noting that there is more to their journey that cannot fit into a statement and promised to share the full story when the time is right. The announcement has garnered support from various figures, including actress Indya Moore, who is also a member of the transgender community.
