Journalists and employees formed a human chain around Czech public radio in Prague on Monday in a warning strike against a government plan to change the funding of public broadcasters. The move by the government of Prime Minister Andrej Babiš has prompted concerns that it could threaten media independence.

Under the government's plan, approved last week, public radio and television would be funded from the state budget starting in the next year, shifting from the current system of fees paid by individuals, households, and businesses. Critics have drawn parallels to populist governments in Slovakia and Hungary, suggesting the change could give the ruling coalition power to influence the media.

The plan also indicates that public broadcasters would receive approximately 15% less funding this year. Directors of public radio and television have stated that this reduction could result in hundreds of staff layoffs, decreased production capabilities, and the cancellation of programs.

During the 24-hour protest, staffers clad in black symbolically lined up around the radio station's headquarters. Some programs experienced delays, and online and social media services were limited. Organizers indicated that further actions are being planned.
