Cyclist Suffers Brain Injury in Road Rage Attack; Driver Avoids Jail

A man who left a cyclist with a severe brain injury after a road rage incident has been sentenced to a two-year supervision order instead of jail time. Joseph Hedley, 39, grabbed Iain Brown by the throat and pushed him to the ground on September 20, 2024, in Edinburgh, Scotland. Hedley and a passenger then left the scene, leaving Mr. Brown unconscious on the road.

Mr. Brown suffered a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain, requiring emergency hospital treatment. The incident was captured on mobile phone footage and shared on social media. Hedley surrendered to police after a public appeal was issued to identify him.

Hedley pleaded guilty to assault causing severe injury, permanent impairment, and danger to life. His defense attorney stated that Hedley did not intend to inflict such severe injuries and has not driven since the incident. The defense also mentioned that the cyclist had shouted abuse at Hedley and his passenger and shone a safety light into their vehicle, and that a passenger in Hedley's car had experienced a seizure, prompting Hedley to exit his vehicle.

Sheriff Fergus Thomson acknowledged the significant injuries inflicted but opted for a non-custodial sentence. Hedley was also placed on a curfew for 12 months, requiring him to remain at his home address between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., and given a two-year supervision order. Prosecutors noted that the cyclist's injuries were life-threatening. Following the sentencing, a procurator fiscal stated that Hedley's actions were horrific and could have had more devastating consequences, but he has been held accountable.
