Cultivating Zest: A Key to Well-being and Resilience

Approaching life with positive expectations, a get-up-and-go attitude, and eagerness is linked to numerous positive outcomes, according to research in positive psychology. This trait, often referred to as zest, can be intentionally developed to help individuals manage daily stressors and create more fulfilling lives.

Zest is characterized by cultivated cheerfulness and joy, distinct from hyperarousal or excessive stimulation. When faced with stress or discomfort, it can be challenging to approach tasks with full commitment. However, strategies exist to increase zest even amid conflict and a deluge of negative information.

The Science of Zest

Psychologists Christopher Peterson and Martin Seligman, pioneers in positive psychology, identified zest as one of 24 universal character strengths in their 2004 text, "Character Strengths and Virtues." Cultivating zest encourages full engagement with life, a positive anticipation for each day, and an eagerness for the possibilities it holds. It has also been described using terms like vitality, exuberance, and the French phrase "joie de vivre," or the joy of living.

A comprehensive analysis of data from over 130 studies involving more than 275,000 people globally found that while most character strengths correlate with better mental health, zest and hope showed the strongest associations with mental well-being across diverse countries and age groups. Zest contributes to life satisfaction among children, adolescents, and adults. Furthermore, a study of nearly 10,000 employed adults indicated that those with high zest scores reported greater job satisfaction and were more likely to perceive their work as a calling. Individuals scoring high on zest measures also tend to view their lives as more meaningful.

Strategies for Cultivating Zest

To enhance zest, experts suggest employing behavioral activation, a proven strategy for managing depression. This involves taking proactive steps to boost one's energy and mood. Practical recommendations include engaging daily in a healthy pleasure, participating in physical activity, and completing at least one task that fosters a sense of accomplishment.

While some individuals naturally exhibit high levels of zest, invigorating those around them, research indicates that zest can be cultivated by anyone, at any age. Strategies for developing zest include savoring pleasant experiences, setting positive intentions, and adopting an adventurous perspective towards life. Other intentional practices that can lift spirits include taking a brisk 10-minute walk each morning, engaging in cardiovascular or strength-building exercises, practicing mindfulness techniques like Reiki or yoga, sharing laughter with friends, and participating in stimulating tasks and work.

The VIA Institute on Character offers a range of resources, including activities, workbooks, and courses, some of which are free, to help improve all character strengths, including zest.

Seeking Support

For individuals facing physical illness, pain, or unhealthy lifestyle behaviors, cultivating zest can be more challenging. In such circumstances, seeking assistance from mental health professionals, physicians, or fitness instructors may be beneficial. Rather than solely focusing on difficulties, developing skills, traits, and perspectives that promote well-being can be a valuable investment. Acquiring zest can not only help navigate challenging times but also enhance one's ability to perceive beauty and thrive in both personal and professional spheres.
