The Chicago Cubs achieved a franchise record by hitting nine home runs in a commanding victory against their National League Central rival, the Milwaukee Brewers. The offensive explosion saw star third baseman Alex Bregman hit three of the team's nine home runs, a feat that ties for the second-most team home runs in a single Major League Baseball game.

Cubs starter Clay Holmes pitched a scoreless first inning before the offense ignited. Left fielder Tyrone Taylor opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the first inning off Brewers starter Kyle Harrison. Second baseman Nico Hoerner followed with a solo home run, extending the lead to 3-0.

In the second inning, Bregman launched the first of his three home runs, a two-run shot that put the Cubs ahead 6-0. The home run barrage continued in the fourth inning with back-to-back homers from right fielder Seiya Suzuki and Bregman's second of the game. Bregman's second home run was the fifth hit by the Cubs off Harrison through four innings.

Catcher Carson Kelly added to the lead in the seventh inning with a solo home run, making it 10-2. Following Kelly's blast, Brewers manager Pat Murphy brought in first baseman Andrew Vaughn to pitch the remainder of the game. With a position player on the mound, the Cubs continued their power display, with Matt Shaw, Michael Conforto, and Bregman hitting home runs off Vaughn over the next two innings.

This nine-homer performance also set a National League record for most home runs in August, with 62, surpassing the 2023 Atlanta Braves' mark of 61. The 2019 New York Yankees hold the MLB record for most home runs in August with 74.

Bregman's three-homer game was his second of the month, and the Cubs now have four individual three-homer games this season. Pete Crow-Armstrong and Dansby Swanson are the other Cubs players to achieve this feat this season. This marks only the fourth time in MLB history that a team has had four players record at least three home runs in a single game within the same season, joining the 2001 Brewers, 1956 Cincinnati Reds, and 1950 Brooklyn Dodgers.

Bregman hit 12 home runs in August, and Crow-Armstrong hit 15. They are the third pair of teammates to each hit at least 12 homers in the same month, following Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris, and Iván Rodríguez and Rafael Palmeiro.

The Cubs, now with a record of 78-60, are set to continue their series against the Brewers (85-53) on Tuesday.
