Bromley Council is set to discuss substantial plans for a £130 million renovation of the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre. The proposed overhaul aims to modernize the facilities, but has drawn objections from England Hockey, the Football Foundation, and members of the indoor climbing community.
England Hockey and the Football Foundation have expressed concerns that the proposed shared multi-sport artificial grass pitch would not adequately meet the demands of both hockey and football. They are also worried about the potential loss of an existing artificial pitch at the center.
The indoor climbing community has raised objections regarding the provision for a climbing wall within the new sports center, which is slated to be relocated to the current 5-a-side building. While Bromley planning officers noted that the proposed space for the climbing facility would be nearly three times the size of the current one, objectors remain concerned about the relocation and the adequacy of the new space.
Further objections have been lodged concerning the impact of the proposed development on the historic motorsport track. The plans would involve building on certain sections of the track, which objectors argue would prevent its future use and the ability for people to walk the historic circuit. However, Bromley planning officers have stated that the entirety of the racing circuit would be retained and remain "clearly recognisable" despite the modifications. Some sections of the Stadium Straight are planned to be narrowed to accommodate additional outdoor sporting and recreational facilities, including 5-a-side football and 3v3 basketball pitches.
The Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, a world-famous sporting venue, is a significant site for athletic training and competition. The proposed revamp aims to update its infrastructure for a new generation of athletes and visitors.
