Crystal Hefner, a former Playboy Playmate and the host of true-crime shows, has spoken out about her marriage to the late Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, stating she felt "absolutely brainwashed" and lived under strict control at the Playboy Mansion.
During an appearance on the "No One Asked Her" podcast, Hefner described a life at the mansion where she was constantly monitored by approximately 70 employees. She recounted that she didn't even know how to turn on her car's headlights when she left because she was always home before dark, as movie nights were scheduled for 6 p.m., which she viewed as a disguised curfew.
Hefner, who was 26 when she married the 86-year-old Hefner in 2012, detailed instances of emotional abuse and control. She stated that Hefner would dictate her appearance, telling her to tone up if she gained weight, and specify acceptable nail colors and clothing choices. He also reportedly instructed her to wear clothing with the Playboy logo and to dye her roots if they grew out.
"I think I was absolutely brainwashed, but there was nothing out there that validated me," Hefner said. "So I just thought I was the crazy one because all of the media put Hef on such a pedestal that I'm like, 'OK, if they all see him as this larger-than-life amazing human, there must be something wrong with me.'"
She recalled Hefner's past interviews, including one where he argued with feminists and stated, "Women are animals; what else would they be?" Hefner admitted that at the time, she sided with him, going against her own feelings while being kept in a home she described as "dilapidated" and being unable to see her family.
Hefner also suggested that her experience might have involved Stockholm syndrome, a psychological response where a captive develops a connection with their captor, due to the isolated environment of the mansion. "Maybe, in a way, it was Stockholm syndrome, which I truly believe happened there because it was such a bubble," she said. "But I did feel compelled to protect him for some reason."
Crystal Hefner began dating Hugh Hefner at age 21. They were engaged in 2010, called off their wedding in 2011, but reconciled and married in 2012. She remained with him until his death in 2017 at age 91.
Following Hefner's death, Crystal Hefner struggled to leave the bedroom where they had stayed, remaining in the house for six weeks. She later sought therapy and realized the extent to which the mansion environment had affected her.
In her 2024 memoir, "Only Say Good Things: Surviving Playboy and Finding Myself," Crystal Hefner further elaborated on her experiences and her journey to recovery. While she expressed gratitude for the opportunities and life experiences Hefner provided, she also detailed the emotional toll of their relationship and her efforts to tell her truth and help others who may have gone through similar experiences.
