A cruise ship lifeguard has admitted to engaging in sexual activity with a 17-year-old passenger on two occasions in his cabin, authorities reported. The incident occurred aboard the MSC World America.
Rafael Cayetano Blanco, a 38-year-old Guatemalan national, was arrested when the ship returned to its home port in Miami on Saturday. He is currently being held on an immigration detainer, according to officials.
Investigators were informed by Cayetano Blanco that he exchanged phone numbers with the 17-year-old passenger on August 16, the first day of the cruise. He stated that the passenger later came to his cabin that night, and they engaged in sexual activity. Police records indicate she returned to his cabin three days later for a second encounter.
Cayetano Blanco confessed to the sexual activity with the minor and faces charges of unlawful sexual activity with a minor. He remains in custody, with his immigration status also a factor.
The MSC World America, capable of carrying over 6,700 passengers and 2,100 crew members, began its voyage from Miami on August 15. The cruise had scheduled stops in Honduras, Mexico, and the Bahamas.
In a statement, MSC said, "On discovery of a breach of conduct by a crew member and an alleged criminal act, we immediately contacted the relevant law enforcement authorities." The cruise line added that it "fully supported the investigation and provided every assistance to the guest. The crew member concerned has been dismissed."
