Travel experts are highlighting Sibenik as a more affordable and less crowded alternative to the popular tourist destination of Dubrovnik, Croatia. This historic waterfront city, located less than an hour from Split Airport, offers a similar Adriatic experience at a significantly lower cost.
Dubrovnik, a UNESCO-listed city, attracts over two million visitors annually, leading to peak-season crowds and higher prices. Entry to its famous City Walls costs €35 (£30), and a pint of beer can reach €6 (£5.16). In contrast, Sibenik provides a more tranquil setting with a pint of local beer averaging €2.75 (£2.37) and a three-course meal for two costing approximately €25 (£21.50) less than in Dubrovnik. Three-night holidays in Sibenik start from around £379, which is up to 31 percent less than comparable breaks in Dubrovnik.
"Croatia remains one of Europe’s most popular summer destinations, particularly around Dubrovnik and Split where peak-season demand can place pressure on prices," said Nevin Nelson, managing director at First Choice. "As a result, many holidaymakers are looking at destinations that offer the same Adriatic experience, but without the premium attached to the most established resorts."
Historic and Natural Attractions
Sibenik is notable as Croatia's oldest native city and boasts two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Cathedral of St James and St Nicholas Fortress. The latter is situated offshore and accessible by boat.
The city also serves as a gateway to the Krka National Park, famous for its waterfalls and walking trails, which is about a 20-minute drive away. Boat trips from Sibenik's harbor offer access to nearby islands and quieter stretches of the Dalmatian coast. For beach lovers, Banj Beach and Rezalište Beach are local options, while Lake Prokljan, Croatia's second-largest lake, provides an inland natural setting known for its diverse birdlife and ecosystem.
Dining and Accommodation
Culinary highlights in Sibenik include Konoba Nostalgija, known for fresh tuna tartare and seafood, and the Michelin-starred Pelegrini, which offers innovative Dalmatian cuisine. Konoba Marenda is recommended for traditional dishes like seafood risotto, with prices around €10 (£8.59).
Accommodation options are also more affordable, with stays at hotels like Hotel Bellevue - Superior City Hotel offering central bases. Three-night August stays with breakfast can be found starting from £423 per person.
"What makes Sibenik stand out is how much you can experience within a short distance," said Taylor Marshall, product executive at First Choice. "You can explore the old town in the morning, take a boat trip to nearby islands in the afternoon, go on day trips to national parks or nearby towns—and still be back along the waterfront for dinner."
Another affordable coastal city mentioned is Rijeka, located on the Kvarner Bay. Known as a gateway to islands like Krk and Cres, Rijeka offers scenic beauty and lower prices, with glasses of wine costing around €2.50 (£2.20). Like Sibenik, it provides an alternative to the more frequented tourist hubs, offering a mix of natural beauty, historical sites, and cultural experiences without the premium price tag.
