Interior Secretary Doug Burgum announced that excavation for a large arch proposed by President Donald Trump will begin within two weeks. The structure is planned for Memorial Circle on Columbia Island, situated between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. Burgum described the site as a "barren traffic circle" and, using language attributed to Trump, called the arch "one of the Great Pieces of American Architecture" and "the most spectacular and beautiful arch of them all."

Critics, however, have labeled the project a "disgraceful" vanity project, arguing that it represents a misallocation of resources at a time when Americans are facing economic hardship, including affordability and housing crises. The announcement comes as an international conflict has continued for over six months without a clear resolution.

This initiative is part of a larger pattern of Trump's focus on architectural and decorative changes during his time in office. Reports from The New York Times suggest that a significant portion of his attention was dedicated to renovations. Previous projects have included additions of gold embellishments to the White House, the conversion of the Rose Garden into a patio-like space, and the construction of a large ballroom.

Other initiatives have included attempts to rename the Kennedy Center and a renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. These projects have also faced criticism.

Members of Congress have voiced strong opposition to the arch proposal. Representative Melanie Stansbury stated on X, "While hardworking Americans are struggling to pay for food, housing, and healthcare and American service members are putting their lives on the line—this guy is over here building an arch to himself in front of Arlington National Cemetery. Disgraceful."

Senator Tammy Duckworth raised concerns about the location, noting on X that "Building yet another golden eyesore, this time right by the DCA landing approach, in one of the most complex airspaces in the entire country. Trump puts his vanity projects over your safety."

Representative Don Beyer suggested that the administration is accelerating the project due to political calculations, tweeting, "Trump and Burgum are disregarding risks and rushing this towering monument to Trump’s vanity because they believe Republicans will get crushed in November. They believe, correctly, that the project will be endangered by a new Democratic majority that actually stands up to them."

Gabe Sanchez criticized the priorities, stating, "What the fuck are we doing here?! Americans wanted healthcare and lower prices, not Trump’s ugly and expensive vanity projects."

A statement from Rogue POTUS Staff called the potential monument "abominable," especially given the proximity to Arlington National Cemetery and referred to the former president as a "draft dodger insurrectionist."
