Cristiano Ronaldo Suspended by Portugal After Leaving National Team Camp
The Portuguese Football Federation has initiated disciplinary proceedings against the star striker following a dispute with manager Jorge Jesus over playing time.
Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation amid disciplinary proceedings stemming from his decision to leave the national team camp. The suspension follows a disagreement with manager Jorge Jesus regarding Ronaldo's playing time in a recent Nations League match.
The federation stated that "disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, following a decision by the Non-Professional Section on October 9, 2026." Ronaldo, 41, has apologized to his teammates and supporters, acknowledging that his departure from the team warranted discipline.
"If I am physically fit, playing for my club, scoring goals, I hope, that after serving whatever suspension is imposed on me, I will be available, as I have always been until today, to compete and win for our national team," Ronaldo said in a social media post.
Despite the national team suspension, Ronaldo returned to club play for Al-Nassr FC in the Saudi Pro League. He scored a goal in the team's 3-0 victory on Friday against Diriyah. This goal marked his 980th career goal for club and country.
The duration of Ronaldo's suspension has not yet been determined by the FPF. However, according to the federation’s disciplinary regulations, a player who abandons or fails to appear for a national team activity without justification can be sanctioned with a suspension ranging from one to six months.
Portugal's next UEFA Nations League match is scheduled for mid-November against Denmark.
