The season finale of "Criminal Minds: Evolution," titled "Bad Blood," brought the Elias Voit (Zach Gilford) storyline to a dramatic close, while also concluding the reign of terror of serial killer James Crowley.
The Climax of Crowley's Plan
The episode flashed back two months to reveal the intricacies of Crowley's plan, which involved intricate murder boards and lectures on "The Dark Triad" at Bogner University. Notably, Laura Boyd, who had sought advice from Crowley about her boyfriend Lance Kingston, and Voit's daughter, Holly, were present at the lecture. In the present, Crowley kidnaps Holly from Tollden College, where she was in witness protection, despite being followed by security.
Meanwhile, FBI Director Ray Madison, informed of Voit's prison escape, issues a shoot-to-kill order, despite the BAU's belief that Voit is reformed and only seeking to apprehend Crowley to protect his family. Voit, recalling a past victim Deena Ryan, realizes Crowley will be waiting for him in Florida, as Crowley had initially approached Voit under the guise of being Ryan's cousin.
The Rescue and the Confrontation
At BAU headquarters, the team discovers Crowley used Sheila's IRS connections to abduct Holly, aiming to destroy Voit emotionally before physically. They also connect Crowley to Alexander Wescott, a businessman linked to Deena Ryan and Margot Crowley, The Fan's mother. Their investigation points them to Tulock, Florida, but Laura Boyd's safety becomes paramount. A live video feed shows Laura in a situation mirroring Lance Kingston's before he was branded. She reveals she will only survive if Voit is allowed to reach his target. When Garcia attempts to trace the feed, Laura is electrocuted, prompting Crowley to focus on Holly while preparing for Voit's arrival.
Holly, rather than succumbing to fear, confronts Crowley, who reminds her of her earlier questions about inheriting a dark side. He uses her lie about her father being dead to taunt her, suggesting she tried to kill Voit in prison. Holly insists Voit will kill Crowley, but Crowley threatens to spill her blood first.
Resolution and Redemption Arc
The BAU locates Laura at an abandoned Westcott Printing Inc. factory in Philadelphia. Using a looped security feed, they infiltrate the building and find Laura on a pressure plate rigged to explode. Garcia works to disarm the bomb remotely, and Luke Alvez volunteers to manually disable it, ultimately surviving an explosion in a nod to his lost dog, Roxy. With Laura safe, the focus shifts to Crowley, but Voit has already arrived.
Voit confronts Crowley, initially appearing to surrender, but then overpowers him. He reunites with Holly, who is then electrocuted by Crowley. Voit attacks Crowley, and as he attempts to handcuff himself, Crowley retaliates. Holly returns and stabs Crowley repeatedly, killing him. As the FBI arrives, Voit takes responsibility for Crowley's death, accepting handcuffs to protect Holly. Rossi intervenes, defending Voit's actions and testifying Holly's wounds were self-defense.
Aftermath and Future Cases
Director Madison acknowledges Voit's minimal threat level but still sentences him to federal penitentiary for Crowley's murder, closing his case with the BAU. Six weeks later, the team is shown dropping Henry off at college and Rossi preparing to write a book about Voit. A spectral vision of Voit appears to Rossi, questioning the book's purpose, but Rossi asserts he knows Voit better than Voit knows himself. The season concludes with the BAU receiving a new case involving unidentified body parts delivered to FBI offices, signaling the end of their break and the anticipation of Season 2.
