Today show host Craig Melvin recently drew a mixed reaction from fans after sharing a first-person photograph of his feet on a beach during his vacation. The Tuesday post featured a caption stating, "Out of office… Nothing like hanging with the family. Hope you’re enjoying this summer too." The image, which predominantly displayed Melvin's feet in the sand, prompted a wide range of responses from social media users, from humorous remarks about foot fetishes to calls for pedicures.
Some fans found the photo amusing. "Well Craig nice feet. You are such a good looking man," one user commented. Another joked, "My boy got the Dawgs out," while a third quipped, "In this economy? Feet ain’t free, Craig!" However, not all reactions were as lighthearted. "Kid, time for a pedicure," one user advised, with another adding, "Yeah, I don’t need to see anybody’s feet. Take it easy Craig."
Melvin's co-host, Carson Daly, joined the conversation by complimenting the brand of flip-flops Melvin was wearing in the photo. "The greatest ever (Not paid to say that!)" Daly wrote, referring to the OluKai brand.
The discussion around Melvin's vacation photo also touched upon a security incident that occurred at the 'Today' show just before his vacation began. In late July, a man identified as Andrew Truelove, 41, breached the 'Today' set and allegedly lunged at Melvin. According to police statements, Truelove was quickly apprehended and arrested. Melvin addressed the incident on air, stating, "Thankfully he was apprehended quickly. He was placed under arrest. We are cooperating fully with the NYPD as they investigate the matter and we are just very happy that everyone is safe."
Truelove, a former Los Angeles resident who was the subject of a 2023 LA Times profile detailing his struggles with homelessness, was charged with hate crime menacing, hate crime burglary, hate crime criminal trespass, and harassment. Police are reportedly treating the incident as a hate crime after Truelove allegedly hurled a racial slur at Melvin and asked for Al Roker before confronting Melvin. Truelove was arraigned on charges of burglary in the third degree as a hate crime and menacing in the third degree as a hate crime. A cash bail of $10,000 was set, along with a temporary order of protection for Melvin and Roker. Truelove remains in jail on Rikers Island, as he has not posted bail.
