Craig Melvin addressed a security incident at the "Today" show's New York City headquarters on Thursday, assuring viewers he was unharmed. A man who had slipped past security confronted Melvin in a stairway at 30 Rockefeller Center.
The intruder, reportedly wearing a backpack, approached Melvin and hurled a racial slur during the brief encounter. The man allegedly demanded to speak with Al Roker before confronting Melvin. Melvin alerted security, and the individual was detained and subsequently arrested by law enforcement.
The New York Police Department confirmed that an individual was taken into custody without incident. A statement from "Today" indicated that an unauthorized person entered an area near Studio 1A and approached Melvin, who then alerted security. The show stated there was no altercation and no injuries were reported, and that the program is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
Melvin posted on social media Thursday, stating, "I’m doing just fine. Thanks for reaching out. I’m looking forward to seeing you tomorrow morning on @todayshow." The anchor is scheduled to be off the show next week for a pre-planned summer vacation, with Taylor Twellman set to fill in.
Co-host Savannah Guthrie also announced she will be absent from the show for several weeks to film a new Wordle series. Guthrie had previously taken a hiatus from "Today" earlier in the year following her mother's disappearance.
